WHO WE ARE

The Portuguese Facial Institute, founded in 2016 by Dr. David Sanz and Prof. Dr. David Ângelo, is a nationally and internationally recognized center with over eight years of experience, dedicated to the specialized treatment of head and neck diseases, namely orofacial pain and temporomandibular dysfunction and orthognathic surgery.


The collaboration between Dr. David Sanz and Prof. Dr. David Ângelo began during a maxillofacial surgery internship at the Coimbra University Hospital Center (CHUC) in May 2016. From their friendship emerged the dream of creating the Portuguese Facial Institute.


Over the years, the Institute has grown significantly, now bringing together a team of 23 specialists from various fields, reinforcing its position as a national and international reference.

 

With an impressive track record, the Portuguese Institute of the Face has received approximately 9,000 patients (first consultations), successfully performing around 1,500 surgeries under general anesthesia and approximately 4,000 procedures with local anesthesia over the past eight years. One of the important indicators for the Portuguese Institute of the Face is the patient satisfaction rate, which has an average score of 9.4/10. On Google Reviews - a tool used to evaluate institutions - the Portuguese Institute of the Face stands out as the reference clinic in Portugal, with an average rating of 4.9/5. These indicators are an important way to internally assess the results of our vision for patient care, always focusing on humanized medicine and personalized care.


The Portuguese Institute of the Face also stands out as the first center in Portugal certified by the European Association for Cranio Maxillo Facial Surgery for training in Temporomandibular Joint Pathology and Orthognathic Surgery. In addition, its contribution to research is noteworthy, with over 30 published scientific articles and the successful completion of two research projects under the Portugal 2020 initiative.


Since 2021, the Portuguese Institute of the Face has been recognized as a center of excellence in research and development, being a leading SME since 2022. In 2023, the institution was recognized by the Commission for Equality in Labor and Employment for its exemplary practices in pay equity, reinforcing its commitment to equal pay between women and men.

WE FOCUS ON THE PATIENT-DOCTOR RELATIONSHIP, ETHICS AND CONFIDENTIALITY

Research is paramount because it is only through this path that we can progress and offer our patients the best and most exclusive treatments. Part of IPFACE’s profits is annually invested in the IPFACE research unit. The most important study taking place at the moment is the TEMPOJIMS study, an international study with 7 prestigious partners in which biomaterial is being developed to regenerate the temporomandibular articular disc. This study has won 6 research awards and is a pioneer worldwide.


One of the most prestigious courses at IPFACE is the cadaver arthroscopy course at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon.
