What is it?
It is a fungal infection that almost the entire population has in the oral cavity, but can infect the oral mucosa in states of low immunity, for example. If this infection is not treated, it can become chronic.
What are the Signs and Symptoms?
Chronic Candidiasis can present essentially in two forms: white and red:
- Thickened white lesions on the lateral border of the tongue or behind the labial commissures
- Red lesions on the dorsum of the tongue
Can it Malign?
Some forms of chronic candidiasis are potentially malignant, so if they do not resolve with medical treatment, they may turn malignant. Therefore, a correct diagnosis and approach to these lesions are essential to prevent a possible malignant transformation.
Is there Treatment?
Yes. Treatment is carried out through specific medication. If the lesions persist after medical treatment, another type of treatment should be undertaken. Do not hesitate to contact our Oral Medicine team, who will be willing to assist you at every step of the treatment.
Contact Endoscopy in Oral Lichen Planus
Contact Endoscopy is a non-invasive, painless examination that identifies fungi in the oral cavity, and in chronic candidiasis, it screens for cells that may be potentially malignant, guiding treatment and follow-up for the patient.
